Frequently Asked Questions
For Employers
Q Do you work on a contingency or retained basis?
We typically work on a contingency basis at market rates. We are also happy to discuss other arrangements, including exclusive or retained searches, when they better fit the needs of a particular engagement. The first step is signing a placement fee agreement so we can begin working together with clear expectations.
Q Are you experts in a particular market?
We work nationwide across practice areas, with a focused approach tailored to each client’s preferred markets and hiring priorities. Rather than treating searches as transactional, we invest in long-term relationships with our client firms and take those relationships seriously. As part of that commitment, we do not contact lawyers at our client firms about opportunities elsewhere.
Q We often give searches to recruiters and never hear back or receive a single candidate. How are you different?
We understand how frustrating that experience can be. When we take on a search, we work it thoughtfully and communicate what we are seeing in the market. That includes reporting back on outreach, candidate feedback, and any market challenges affecting the search. Not every search produces immediate results—particularly for highly competitive partner or niche practice needs—but you will know the effort being made and the information we are gathering on your behalf. Our goal is to be a responsive recruiting partner you can rely on as you grow your legal talent.
For Candidates
Q I'm not sure I want to change jobs, should I still contact you?
Yes. We are happy to speak with you confidentially, even if you are only beginning to consider whether a move may be right for you. Career transitions are significant decisions, and you should have the time and information you need to evaluate your options thoughtfully. If you want to explore the market, we can assess together whether working together makes sense. If your goal is to improve your current situation or pause a potential move, we can also help you think through next steps and develop a plan to support your long-term career goals.
Q I’m a partner but I don’t have a significant book of business. Are there any options for me?
Yes. There are often career options for partners without a substantial portable book of business, although the market can vary depending on practice area, seniority, experience, and firm demand. Many firms prioritize partners with accretive client relationships, but some searches are driven by strategic needs, succession planning, subject-matter expertise, or gaps in a specific practice. We would be glad to discuss your background confidentially and help you evaluate realistic options if you are considering a move.
Q I'm an associate. Why would I need to work with a recruiter to find a new job?
You do not necessarily need a recruiter to make a move, but the right recruiter can be a valuable resource. A strong recruiter can help you identify employers that align with your goals, position your credentials strategically, prepare for interviews, review your materials, and support you throughout the process. A thoughtful search also takes time, and working with a recruiter can reduce that burden while helping you approach the market in a coordinated way. We generally recommend working with one recruiter at a time and choosing someone you trust, who understands your goals, and who will represent you professionally.
